Jim John Berner

James J. Berner, 79, of Lockport, New York, passed away on April 6, 2026 at the Batavia VA Hospital.

Jim served in the United States Marine Corps from October 1965 to January 1967, during which time he was deployed to serve as a Private First Class Rifleman on the front lines of the Vietnam War. It was there that he suffered service-related injuries, which rendered him disabled for the remainder of his life. While his service to his country was more than honorable, it was extremely life-changing for him. However, Jim did not let being disabled define him. He was extremely proud of his daughter and son, and even prouder of his two grandsons. He was constantly checking in to make sure his family was safe and to see if anyone needed anything. Underneath his shell of armor, Jim had a heart of gold and cherished his loved ones.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He also had a real passion for searching for gently used treasures. He would spend his free time refurbishing these treasures to fit his own unique style. His vision that anything was salvageable was truly admirable.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Tammy Ward (Arnie), his son David Berner (Jennifer), his grandson, Michael Ficarra, and his grandson, Brandon Banks (Madelynn). He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers. His sister Judy Ray was very dear to him.

It was Jim’s adamant wish to be a tissue and organ donor at the time of his passing. This gracious gift is a true testament to how big his heart of gold truly was.

Rest in peace Dad/Grandpa. You are now relieved of your duties soldier. Semper Fi.

A private family service will be held to celebrate the life of James Berner.
