John Melvin Thurston II, of Lockport, NY, passed away peacefully on September 28th, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 79 years old.
Born and raised in Lockport, John was the beloved son of Evelyn (née Thompson) and J. Melvin Thurston. He was a man of warmth, dedication, and quiet strength. John proudly served his country in the United States Army. After completing his military service, he graduated from Niagara University, beginning a long and successful career in the banking industry. Following his retirement, he pursued a second career as a licensed realtor. Throughout his professional life, he was respected by colleagues and clients alike for his integrity, strong work ethic, and steady wisdom.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John was active in community service and served as a past president of the Eastern Hills Sunrise Rotary Club.
A lifelong athlete and avid sports fan, John enjoyed playing baseball, golf, and bowling. He was a devoted supporter of Buffalo sports and faithfully cheered on the Bills and Sabres every season, through thick and thin.
Above all, John's greatest joy was his family. He was the devoted husband of Mary Jane (née Murtaugh) for 53 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two children: Kathleen LaRoach (Philip) of Henderson, NV, and Bryan Thurston (Julia) of Lockport, NY. He was a proud and loving "Papa" to his five grandsons—Micah, Oliver, Miles, Danny, and Jack—each of whom he adored and cherished spending time with.
In addition to his athleticism and love for sports, John was an avid reader who especially enjoyed history, comedy, and music. He treasured time with his family—whether traveling with Mary Jane, watching games together, or simply enjoying quiet afternoons at home.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Jane; his children, Kathleen and Bryan; and his grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Cheryl (Robert) Brown (née Murtaugh), and his nephew, J. Scott Shulock. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and J. Melvin Thurston, and his nephew, Paul Shulock. He will be deeply missed by many extended family members and dear friends.
John will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, and deep love of family and he will be missed beyond measure by all who knew him.
