Margaret Joanne Johnson, known by her preferred name of Joanne, 85, of Albion died November 21, 2023 peacefully in her sleep at the Gables of Brighton. Born December 6, 1937 to G.A and Lulu McLaughlin in Detroit Michigan, she earned her Bachelors of nursing from Wayne State University in Detroit in the early 60’s.
She married Neil Johnson on Sept 12, 1964, and moved to New York State. In 1970 they moved to Orleans County. She was the director of patient services for the Orleans County health department and later, director of the health department. She also worked as a nurse for Iroquois drug rehabilitation center. In later years worked as a care coordinator at Med America and Blue cross Blue Shield. Her final job was an intake nurse for Hospice.
She was involved in Business and professional women. She and Neil started the Orleans County 4-H Rabbits Raisers Club over 45 years ago. She helped influence the lives of many young people. She went to the first Presbyterian church of Albion and later in life became a member. She received nurse of distinction award in 1994 from Genesee region Homecare. She was a founding member of Hospice of Orleans. She loved being with her family, especially celebrating with them at Christmas
She is survived by her husband of 59 years Neil Johnson. Her children Tom Johnson (Stephanie Sanger), Sarah Johnson. Granddaughters Emma (Caitlin Boker) Sanger-Johnson, Grace Sanger-Johnson, Izzy Sanger-Johnson. Great Granddaughter Maya Boker.
There will be no prior calling hours. A celebration of Joanne ‘s life will be held on December 2, 2023 at 11:00 at the First Presbyterian church of Albion, 29 East State St. Albion NY. In lieu of flowers donations made be made to Orleans County Rabbit Raisers, the first Presbyterian Church of Albion, or Hospice of Orleans, 14080-NY 31, Albion NY. Arrangements have been entrusted to Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes.
