Mary Alice Woods

Mary Alice Woods (nee Heschke) age 94, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Niagara Hospice House. Born on July 25, 1929 to Harold and Gertrude (Miller) Heschke, she was one of seven children. She grew up in Gasport, NY where she would remain in the area with her family the rest of her life.

After completing 8th grade, she began working and had various occupations including working at a canning factory, waitress at The Green Kettle, one of the first people at Tri-Town Ambulance, and more. Mary completed 27 years at Harrison Radiator where she would retire in 1994. However, she was not one to be idle. Mary returned to working at Jex Laundromat for the next 30 years. During her retirement she worked with Hanci Senior Companion Program, and handed out bulletins at Zion Lutheran Church every Sunday.

She had a love of animals from a young age. You could be sure to find at least one pet at her home at all times. Mary enjoyed traveling in her retirement taking cruises to Alaska and Hawaii. These locations were goals of hers, and she accomplished them. Mary continued working, driving, and taking care of her dog and horses until the day of her final hospitalization.

She is survived by daughter Sierra Woods, and granddaughter Afton Brousse, sisters Ida Giertz and Shirley Doty, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is predeceased by brothers William, Donald, Richard, and Clarence Heschke.

Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church 4447 Central Ave. Gasport, NY 14067 on Saturday June 22nd at 12:00pm with a luncheon to follow in the church's recreation area.
