Michael G. Scharing

February 9, 1952 — October 28, 2025

Gasport

Michael Gunther Scharing, age 73, of Gasport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, following a brief illness. He was born on February 9, 1952, in Emmendingen, Germany, a son of the late Gunther and Doris Scharing (Menz).

Michael is survived by his loving wife Judy (Ciliberto), his children Christopher Scharing and Matthew Scharing, and his stepchildren Jodie Hodge (Robert), and Aaron Boyle (Amber). He will be forever loved and remembered by his siblings Ange Bauer (Eckard), and Martin Scharing.

Michael’s legacy extends to his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, alongside several nieces and nephews, who will carry forward his memory and values. He will be eternally missed by many, including brothers and sisters-in-law, extended family members, and numerous friends.

Following Michael’s birth in Germany, the Scharing family moved to Toronto and then Chippawa, Canada, where he was primarily raised, creating lifelong friendships and discovering a love of cars and mischief. Post-high school, he attended Brock University in St. Catharines. Michael started his career working in the medical industry, moving to Germany as an international sales manager. He later moved back and carried on a long industrious career across multiple corporations as GM/President before ultimately starting his own business.

Michael had an adventurous streak that took him skydiving, zip-lining, and skiing out of a tunnel on the side of Zugspitze, the tallest peak in Germany, and traveling the world with Judy. He spoke multiple languages, which aided in his travels, and there wasn’t a museum that he didn’t want to visit and linger in. His curiosity made him an excellent conversationalist who could speak engagingly on most topics or patiently listen to explanations of the latest in pop culture and video game breakdowns by his grandchildren.

If you needed a helping hand or had a building project in mind, Michael was always happy to step in and get his hands dirty. He loved to take his sons and grandsons to the drag races and was always happy to take in a car show. Michael was the families master fire builder who orchestrated fire dinner nights, storytelling, and around-the-fire games.

Upon his retirement in 2012, Michael and Judy lived in various locations across the United States. They encouraged friends and family to vacation at their home and would tour their guests around the notable sites in the area. As Judy retired, they built a house in Gasport to be closer to family and proceeded to travel much of the lower 48, parts of Canada, and Alaska by sprinter van. They used their time at home to host innumerable get-togethers, card games, and out-of-town guests. Michael also enjoyed making and maintaining trails in the woods and doing outdoor work.
