Albion: Richard L. Hanlon, age 84, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 8, 2026. He was born on January 9, 1942 in Lackawanna, NY to the late Charles and Evelyn (Ellis) Hanlon.
Rich was a proud US Navy veteran, who served from 1960-1964. He spent his time in the service as an Aviation electrician's mate. He worked for Niagara Mohawk as a lineman for 39.5 years before retiring. Rich had a passion for pointing out various electrical poles and transformers that he had worked on throughout his career. He was known as a man of routine.
Rich could be found every morning at the Albion Tim Horton's with the newspaper and a Tim Horton's diet coke in hand. He remained active by participating in his golf league that played every Tuesday at various courses, Timber Ridge on Thursdays, and Brown Road on Fridays. Not only could he recount every round he played down to the course, hole, club, and shot with yardage, he also had 3 successful holes-in-one. During his free time, he could be found either tending to his pristine lawn and gardens or betting with his "mad money" at the casino or playing euchre with friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and making memories with his grandchildren, which included endless rounds of golf and putt putt, countless trips to the movie theaters, and attending various sporting events and dance recitals.
Rich is survived by his loving wife Dorothy Hanlon, children Ann Smarpat, Michael (Nadine) Hanlon, Brian (Jody) Mahoney, grandchildren Tyler Smarpat, Brendan (Gina) Mahoney, Amber (Ryan) Smarpat, Erynn (Brian) Ott, Marisa (Jason) Schrader, Michela (Chris) Hanlon, brothers Thomas (Barbara) Hanlon, Robert (Barbara) Hanlon, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rich's family will be holding a private celebration of his life, and he will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu, NY at a later date.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to American Heart Association or First Tee - Western New York (Online at https://firstteewesternnewyork-bloom.kindful.com or mailed to PO BOX 273 Bowmansville, NY 14026).
