Walter D. "Pop" Skrypnik

Walter D. "Pop" Skrypnik, age 78, of Albion, passed away on May 19, 2026 surrounded by his beloved family. Born July 17, 1947 in Knesebeck, Germany, he was the son of the late Ivan and Lydia (Tetzlaff) Skrypnik. Walter went on to further his education at Erie Community College, where he obtained his Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. He worked as a Civil Engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation for nearly 40 years.

Walter served as Military Police in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973. He was a member and served as Commander of the Sheret Post No. 35, American Legion in Albion. Walter was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Holley and then the Grace Baptist Church in Brockport.

He had a deep passion for music and loved to sing karaoke. Walter was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening, games of horseshoes and frisbee in the backyard, and camping, especially at Allegany State Park for his birthday with Carolyn. Annual trips to Dunkirk to visit relatives and Darien Lake Amusement Park with his kids and grandkids were highlights of the summertime. He loved watching Bills games and had many hobbies, but nothing was more important to him than his family.

In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his siblings, Olga, Rudolph, Berta, Lilly, Louie, Ernie, and Edda.

He is survived by the mother of his children: Diane Austin, his loving children, Kim Graca, Cara Riedman (Cecil Moore), Timothy Skrypnik, Joel Skrypnik, Lisa (James) Richmond and Luke (Sabrina Sleiman) Skrypnik; his beloved grandkids, Kensington, Griffin, Jackson, Briella, Kellen, Miyah and Syrus; his partner, Carolyn Gibson; sister, Alwine; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 5th from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home, 21 W. Ave., Albion. Walter's funeral service will be held the following day at the funeral home, Saturday, June 6th at 10:00 AM. A graveside service with military honors will immediately follow the service at Mt. Albion Cemetery. All are welcome for a subsequent luncheon, details to be announced at the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Walter's name can be made to the Sheret Post No. 35, American Legion at, 3431 Gaines Basin Road, Albion, NY 14411.
